The Foursomes Championships concluded on the last weekend of June. Well done to all that competed in either the Ladies, Mixed or Men’s Championships over the last two weeks.
Ladies Foursomes Championship
The final round of the Ladies Foursomes Championship was held last Thursday. Congratulations to Kay Hwang and Colleen Fleming (Club Champions), Kerryn Chad and Cheryl Ewing (B Grade Champions) and Jill Chubb and Sue Hughes (C Grade Champions).
Congratulations also to the Runners up; Elizabeth Dunn and Niki Hosking (Club), Tina Davidson and Fiona Karren (B Grade), and Denise Coates and Jean Nicholson (C Grade).
This is the fourth year in a row that Kay Hwang and Colleen Fleming have won the Ladies Foursomes Championship, and is the 6th straight win for Kay in this event.
Mens Foursomes Championship
The Men’s Foursomes Championships had a number of good storylines in each of the three grades.
Starting with C Grade where Graeme Limbourn & John Nicholson faced off with good friends Richie Robbins & Michael Michaels in a gruelling 7 hole play-off. Although Richie & Michael prevailed over 25 holes the result was bittersweet by all accounts. Neither pair expected their rounds to still be going into a late winter’s afternoon.
In B Grade whilst the front-runners all struck trouble in the second round, two pairs in the middle of the field produced great form reversals to finish within two strokes of each other. In the end Toby Noad & Rob Kershaw triumphed, shooting 10 strokes better in the second round and edging out father-son duo of Michael & Hugh Mashman.
In A Grade we had the top 8 pairs all within 3 strokes of each other to start with so we expected a tight finish. Progress scores from the 7th and 14th holes showed strong performances from four pairs; Greg & Brett Stanford, Michael Judge & Alex Munro, Justin Hurst & Bruce Edwards, and also Tim Chambers & Angus MacDougal. The final few holes took its toll in the wind and defending champions Michael Judge & Alex Munro held on to win with a fantastic round of 73. Runners-up were another father-son duo of Greg & Brett Stanford who played steady all day.
Mixed Foursomes Championship
The Mixed Foursomes Championship was enjoyed by a small field this year and the competition was tight at the top of the field. The top 6 pairs all had a chance as only three strokes separated them after the first round.
A great front nine holes by YS Lee & Kay Hwang saw them cruise to a 6 stroke win in the Championship whilst a strong back nine holes by Nigel Westgarth & Suzanne Cole helped them secure runners-up position.
The small Championship field all had the opportunity to celebrate, and commiserate, together afterwards which was well received. We’d love to see more pairs enjoy this competition next year.
