Mona Vale Golf Club hosted the stroke-play event for the NSW Amateur Championships on Monday 22st and Tuesday 22nd of January. Our course was in superb condition thanks to Sam Neylon and his team.
On Sunday 20th the greens staff worked from 4:30am through to 8:30pm to ensure the whole course was prepared for the elite competition fields.
A field of 150 men played in steamy conditions on Monday as a slight drizzle in the morning kept the rough lush and the humidity high. The scoring proved tough for most, with just over 20 players shooting par or better. Our Course record of 65 set by Alex Munro back in 2015 was bettered by Canadian Joey Savoie who shot an unbelievable 8 under par 64!
On Tuesday the field of 153 players enjoyed beautiful conditions for golf, albeit very warm and sunny with very little breeze. Included in this field was 71 ladies vying for the Women’s Stroke-play title. After 6 players shot in the 60’s around Terrey Hills the previous day, we were expecting some great scores around Mona Vale from the strong ladies field. The Mona Vale ladies Red course was particularly challenging having been extended by 247 metres making a total of 5561 metres.
English woman Emily Toy handled the conditions the best, carding an incredible 3 under 70. Not surprisingly she has claimed the Women’s strokeplay title and tops the matchplay qualifiers.
Congratulations to members Tom Hunt, Shannon Cameron, Alex Peade, Andy Hugill and overseas member Adam Batty, who all took part in the event. A. Batty (59th), A. Hugill (71st), S. Cameron (118th), T. Hunt (180th) and A. Peade (188th) in a field of 240 players.
An exciting 5 way play-off for the final qualifying spot took place late Tuesday for the ladies which resulted in a dramatic finish on the 1st play-off hole. Queenslander Sarah Lee made her 20 foot putt for birdie to advance to the match play finals held in Terrey Hills over the next three days.
